Course description
Short video greeting from Professor Avi Goldfarb introducing himself and the course.
Through this course we aim to understand how digitalization in general and artificial intelligence in particular shapes how management and firms are being understood. Particular emphasis will be on identifying research questions and formulating the theoretical insights needed to understand how digitalization and artificial intelligence impact organizations and markets.

Professor Avi Goldfarb – University of Toronto – Main instructor.
International expert focusing on the management and economics of digitization. His latest books include “The economics of Artificial Intelligence – an Agenda” and “Prediction Machines – the simple economics of AI”. His work is published in top ranked journals including American Economic Review, Management Science, Journal of Marketing Research, and Journal of Economics and Management Strategy.
Professor Wim Vanhaverbeke, Professor Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Surrey Business School, University of Surrey
Wim has published in several international journals such as Organization
Science, Research Policy, Journal of Management Studies, Small Business Economics, Journal of Business Venturing and Technovation.
He was co-editor with Henry Chesbrough and Joel West of “Open Innovation: Researching a New Paradigm” (OUP, 2006) and “New frontiers in open innovation” (OUP, 2014). His current research is focusing on
open innovation in SMEs, and innovation ecosystems
Professor Aija Leiponen, Professor of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Technology at Cornell University
Aijas expertise focuses on organizational strategies in innovation,
particularly Cooperation between organizations. Her work has been published in several international journals such as Industrial and Corporate change, Communications of the ACM, Research Policy, Journal of Comparative Economics among others. She is also author of the book Essays in the Economics of knowledge: Innovation, Collaboration and Organizational Complementarities. Her recent work has examined the interaction between conflict and cooperation in wireless telecommunication standard development and the nature and implications of markets for (big) data.
Dr. Nuria Oliver, Vodaphone Institute and Data-Pop Allience
Computer scientist Nuria Oliver is currently chief scientific adviser at Vodaphone Institute and chief data scientist at DataPop Allience. Her expertise in computer technolog focuses on computational models of human behavior, human computer-interactions, intelligent user interfaces, mobile computing and big data for social good. She is the first female computer scientist in Spain to be named an ACM and is also a Fellow of both the European Association of Artificial Intelligence and IEEE.
Professor Markus Fitza, Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at Frankfurt, School of Finance and Management, Adjunct Professor at Nord University
Markus is a conduct researcher of strategy, corporate governance and entrepreneurship. The Academy of Management Journal, the Strategic Management Journal, the Journal of International Business Studies and the
Proceedings of the Royal Society are som of the leading journals his work has been published in. World renowned media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, USA Today, NBC, der Kurier, die
Wirtschaftswoche, the Guardian and the Independent has featured his academic work on management, economics, sociology, finance and biology.
Associate professor Jan Ole Similä – Nord University – Instructor.
Similä is an expert in knowledge creation, transfer and management and the role of knowledge in innovation. His latest project includes analyzing the knowledge dissemination in high-tech vs low-tech firms (Competitiveness and Knowledge: An International Comparison of Traditional Firms – Routledge). Currently he is working with the fish farming industry on how they use digital technology to enhance productivity.
Researcher Lars Hovdan Molden– Nord University –Molden’s research deals with how firms are able to develop capabilities to handle changes from disruptive changes such as those arising from digitization and AI. His latest projects researches how human decision makers add value when machines get smarter, and how regulation of AI affects business adoption.
Associate professor Jorunn Grande, NORD University and Professor Arild Aspelund, NTNU will also contribute to the course.

Learning Outcomes
After completing the course the candidates will have acquired the following:
Knowledge
- The candidate knows the state of the art of theoretical and empirical work being undertaken within the field of digitization and artificial intelligence and their impact on organizations, markets and the economy
- The candidate is able to evaluate different approaches to studying the interaction between artificial intelligence and organizational development and strategy.
- The candidate knows the most novel empirical techniques for studying digitization and artificial intelligence in the context of economics, management and innovation.
- The candidate knows core theoretical development on how innovation and strategy is shaped by digitization (largely plattforms) and artificial intelligence
Skills
- The candidate can identify gaps in the literature and formulate relevant research questions in order to contribute to the economics, management and/or innovation literature within the topic of the course.
- The candidate is able to clearly define the key concepts of the literature, their interdependencies and their causal mechanisms
General competence
- The candidate is able to assess organization´s options for adopting digitalization and artificial intelligence and can formulate relevant capabilities for the organization.
- The candidate can identify and assess multidisciplinary connections in studying and understanding how digitalization and artificial intelligence impact organizations

Prerequisites
Must fulfill the requirements for admission to the PhD program
Recommended previous knowledge:
Knowledge of core microeconomics at the undergraduate level, management, innovation and organizations is an advantage.
