The NORSI Research Methods’ course Quantitative Methods will be held at CIRCLE, Lund University, Sweden, Monday 5th December – Friday 9th December 2016.
The Course gives 5 ECTS, and is held at CIRCLE in Lund but is organized in cooperation with UiS where your ECTS point will be registered.

Paper/Assignment
To obtain 5 ECTS point you need to hand in an assignment in the form of a paper of 3.000-4.000 words demonstrating competence in using quantitative methods. The paper can be based on a topic of your PhD thesis where you for example present a research question and undertake empirical tests of hypotheses using appropriate methods. It could also be presentation of a design of a survey to be used in your research, or (if you lack data) a discussion of strategies to test and empirically examine a given RQ that you are interested in.
The assignment should reflect the course literature and the lectures. It is important that you problematize and motivate your empirical design (or suggestion of empirical design), and discuss various pitfalls and ways to deal with them. You must be able to show understanding.
The assignments will be graded by Martin Andersson and one other examiner.
Deadline for submission of assignments is 1 March 2017.
You submit your assignment by sending an e-mail with the assignment to Birte Horn-Hanssen.
Evaluation
To obtain 5 ECTS point requires active participation during the course as well as an accepted paper of 3.000-4.000 words demonstrating competence in using quantitative methods. The paper should be based on the topic of the PhD thesis and reflect literature used in the course. If quantitative methods will not be used in the thesis, a paper answering given tasks could substitute a normal paper. However, the concrete form of the written delivery can be further discussed during the course.
Travel
The closest international airport to Lund is Copenhagen Airport (also known as “Kastrup”), in Denmark. The train connection from Copenhagen Airport to Lund is fast (35 minutes) and frequent (every 20 minutes). Train tickets can be purchased from the “Skånetrafiken” ticket machines in the arrivals hall, near the escalators going down to the train platform. You can pay in Euros, Swedish kronor or Danish kronor, and you can use a debit/credit card with a chip. The journey will take you over the Öresund Bridge connecting Denmark to Sweden and via Malmö central station to Lund central station.
The closest local airport to Lund is Malmö Airport (also known as “Sturup”). It has flights from other Swedish airports including Stockholm and some international flights from destinations within Europe. There is an airport shuttle bus to Malmö airport (called “Flygbussarna”) or you can get a taxi to Lund.

NORSI Reimbursement/refund:
As this course is considered a NORSI course all travel expenses etc. will be covered for NORSI students. After completion of the course (handed in paper), please mail in all your tickets and receipts (originals or scanned) to Birte Horn-Hanssen , the NORSI Project Coordinator. However, if your “home” institution has temporarily covered your travel costs, your institution may send BI/Birte and invoice (faktura) asking NORSI to cover your outstanding travel costs with copies of your receipts.
