Norsi invites anyone interested in the latest within innovation research, friends and networks partners of NORSI to attend. The student presentations give interdisciplinary perspectives to a wide range of topics within Innovation Studies.
Present your research and receive the best comments! The Norsi conferences are known for opponents giving well-prepared, insightful, and in-depth comments to all the student presenters. The main rule is that only NORSI PhD students may present, however this year we are opening up for alumni to present if we have enough time in the program.
This is NORSI’s 8th year as a research school. At this year’s annual conference, we will celebrate the developments since NORSI’s commencement in 2012 until 2020. NORSI is in its last year of current funding period, and we are on our way to starting a new NORSI phase – a Nordic NORSI!

Registration and Deadlines
Ealier registration deadline than previous years: The registration deadline this year is much earlier than previous years as the conference is held at Clarion Hotel Energy in Stavanger. In order to avoid extra costs we need to know your attendance and accommodation needs ealier than previous years. NORSI students – you may register for the conference as a presenter (send in abstract) or only as an attendee. We encourage all students to present.

Abstract deadline: 18 December 2019 – submit by email to Birte (unless you submit it in registration form).

GEOINNO2020 & NORSI
TThis year the NORSI conference is held in conjunction with the fifth Geography of Innovation conference that takes place right after the NORSI conference. The dates for the GEOINNO conference are 29-31 January 2020. More information here.
NORSI Conference aim and format
Support and feedback for research in progress: The goal is to provide a comfortable and open environment for NORSI students to presents their research in progress, findings so far, and to receive feedback and support from peers.
Work in progress: This is intended to be a platform for all students and not just those whom are near completion.
Research education: Taking part in the conference is seen as an important part of the research education for students that are part of NORSI. We encourage all NORSI students,alumni, faculty and supervisors to participate.
Present your research and receive the best comments! The Norsi conferences are known for opponents giving well prepared, insightful, and in-depth comments to all the Norsi student presenters. The main rule is that only NORSI PhD students may present, however this year we are oprning up for Alumni to present if we have enough time in the program.
Junior Discussants: NORSI students whom opt to not present are encouraged to attend. NORSI students and alumni attending may be asked to be junior opponents. Even if you do not present, we might ask you to be a junior discussant on a paper.
Research Opportunity – NORSI Research Workshop: After the NORSI conference, and before the GEOINN2020, there is schedule a workshop for the NORSI alumni initiative on the collaborative NORSI research projects. The workshop is a result of discussion at last year’s NORSI conference and a September workshop at BI. NORSI alumni Beniamino Callegari coordinates the workshop. Please let him know if you are interested in participating in the workshop. It will also be possible to register for the workshop in the same form you register for the NORSI workshop. 2 day conference: The conference is a two-day event. Please check for updates to the program before the conference as there may be slight unavoidable changes due to absences etc. Please discuss this event with your supervisors to make the most of this opportunity. There will be an tapas-dinner reception after the presentations on Monday evening We will soon confirm the venue.

Key Note Monday: Professor Erik Stam
Professor Erik Stam is Head of the Utrecht University School of Economics & Full Professor of Strategy, Organization and Entrepreneurship.
Key Note Tuesday: Associate Professor Shiri M. Breznitz
Associate Professor Shiri Breznitz, Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy at University of Toronto will giv a key note lecture titled “Entrepreneurship Education and Firm Creation.”
Breznitz research focus: Shiri M. Breznitz is an economic geographer that specializes in innovation, technology commercialization, and regional economic development. Her research is at the critical intersection of theory and policy to fit the new realities of globalization. Dr. Breznitz’s work has informed policymaking at the local, national, and international levels. She has advised on the role of universities in the larger story of innovation, on the economic impact of biotechnology, and on the role of clusters in driving innovation. In addition, Dr. Breznitz is one of the section editors for Economic Geography at the Geography Compass Journal. Current projects include the role of STEM and non-STEM education and migration on entrepreneurship, the geography of crowdfunding, and ecosystems of innovation.
Breznitz’s book, “The Fountain of Knowledge” with Stanford University Press (July 2014), analyzes universities’ relationships with government and industry, focusing on the biotechnology industry as a case study. She has also, co-edited the book “University Technology Transfer: The Globalization of Academic Innovation,” with Routledge Press (September 2015). In 2018, Dr. Breznitz co-led the University of Toronto’s first Alumni Impact surveys.
Key Note – Alumni: Associate Professor Marte C. W. Solheim
Associate Professor and Head of Stavanger Centre for Innovation Research at the University of Stavanger Business School, Marte C. W. Solheim will share her insights about research dissemination. She will touch on the importance of how to get the courage and the when and where its appropriate to share research findings. Solheim has presented several lectures on this topic at various research seminars and has written about it extensively. She recently had a blog entry at the London School of Economics and Politcial Science Impact Blog about the topic.
Solheim Research focus: Solheim studies the nexus between various forms of diversity and different types of innovation, and has particularly focused on the role of foreign-born workers and innovation & export, experience-based diversity and innovation, diversity management and global business.
Solheim is actively engaged in the public debate on migration-and innovation- related issues in Norway and is invited to speak at national diversity conferences as well as to national policy makers, political spheres and other institutions.
Solheim has written pieces for national newspapers in Norway, such as Aftenposten, VG, Dagbladet, Aftenposten Viten as well as for regional newspapers: Stavanger Aftenblad, Bergens Tidende, and Magazines: Innomag, Ukeavisen Ledelse to mention some. Solheim has appeared on national television (NRK), national radio and on local television (TV VEST) on several occasions discussing her research as well as written pieces for international magazines, such as for regions. Paper and presentation length: Each presentation will receive prepared feed-back from both a senior and a junior opponent. Each student will be given 30 min.; 15 min. presentation and 15 min for feed-back/questions. The paper to be submitted before the conference does not have to be a complete work, and may be in progress, early draft or late stage paper. Max. length should be about 8000 words, however shorter papers in draft versions are also acceptable. All abstracts will be made available online.

Travel paid by NORSI: Travel and accommodation will be covered for all NORSI students, alumni,facult, supervisors and representatives.
Travel Refund: Invoice to NORSI from your institution: Please ask your “home” institution to temporarily covered your travel costs, your institution may send BI/Birte and invoice (faktura) asking NORSI to cover your outstanding travel costs with copies of your receipts. (Norwegian: Hvis ditt lokal studiested legger ut for deg så kan det lokale studiestedet fakturerer BI totalt for alle sine NORSI studenter med en totalsum for reisekostnadene. Legg ved kopi av vedlegg). Please ask your institution to specify who (your name) the invoice/travel refund is for and write NORSI on the invoice. If you have any questions about this, please email Birte Horn-Hanssen.
For direct travel refund: If you are unable to have your institution send an invoice, please contact Birte and you may send her the travel refund directly. Please not that NORSI does not issues per diem (diett penger) but will refund your food expenses, so save your receipts. NORSI does not refund driving costs (kilometergodtgjørelse). In order to receive your travel refund mail/scan in all your original tickets and original receipts (plane, taxi, bus etc.) All travel expences (economy) will be refunded after the conference.
